Rail Traffic Control Integration

ClientRegional Transportation Agency

A new Rail Traffic Control system is under construction, as a result of insourcing rail corridor operation from a third-party transportation provider. An application-layer bridge is designed to integrate the control system with IoT devices and IT services.

Case Study Overview

Initial State

Rail Traffic Control system is planned for deployment into an isolated network segment. Rail corridor sensors and IT services are required to feed data into the core system but SCADA modules are not allowed to directly access public or private networks.

Target State

An operational DMZ and Layer 7 bridge is architected to enable secure connectivity between the cetral control system, IoT devices and IT applications.

Not only such proposed solution addressed immediate requirements of the centralized traffic control, but also served as a shared integration layer between any operational and information systems looking for secure data exchange. This allowed a synergy of SCADA and IT services, improved transit safety and reduced security risks.
